Ciancia at the Opera
Thanks to the initiative of our Enrico Corradi, Ciancia’s annual appointment to the Opera, takes our members this year to Mozart’s Cosi’ Fan Tutte. The performance reserved to our members is on April 12, 2011, at the Cobb Energy Center. Fifty tickets have been reserved at the significantly reduced price of $42 a ticket. During the intermezzo, The Atlanta Opera will offer us a private reception with Champagne, Prosecco and cannoli. Our friends who joined us last year will certainly remember the interesting Italian conversations that took place over some good wine. We had 50 seats reserved and we were sold out before the event. We invite you to take advantage of this special evening of gala, sublime art, music and Italian conversation ...on the special occasion of “the school for lovers” where a game to trust fidelity in relationships and specially girlfriends’ faithfulness turns into a serious lesson that completes the libretto of this grandiose Opera buffa.
Così Fan Tutte is one of the three Mozart operas for which the libretto was written by Da Ponte who took as a theme "fiancée swapping" which dates back to the 13th century, with notable earlier versions being those of Boccaccio's Decameron and Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. Elements from Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew are also present. Only in the fifties this opera regained its place in the standard operatic repertoire for the subject matter was considered risqué throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Even with the sister-opera “Le nozze di Figaro”, stealing all the attention, its fame and impact on other operas has been unquestionable. Its tenets are certainly echoed by the famous Verdi’s aria “La donna e’ mobile”. We warn you that Mozart was a famous joker and not until his “Don Giovanni” and his “Requiem” he mustered all the drama he had learned in his late symphonies. Part of his light repertory, this opera is no disappointment to those who are looking for entertainment. In eighteenth-century Naples, Don Alfonso, a cynical old bachelor, debates women's loyalty with two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who insist that their sweet-hearts - Dorabella and Fiordiligi - are virtuous and faithful, and accept Alfonso's bet that he can prove the ladies fickle if they do as he says for twenty-four hours.
